New Problems Demand New Solutions. We've Been Here Before.

Remember when the IPv4 apocalypse was going to break the internet?

We were running out of addresses. Billions of devices. No solution in sight. The doom-and-gloom crowd were loud and all over the news. Then came IPv6, NAT, CIDR, and a dozen clever engineering workarounds we hadn't even imagined yet. Problem? Meet innovation.

Sound familiar?

Today's headlines are filled with the same breathless panic — data centers are consuming too much power, AI is devouring our water supply, and the grid simply can't keep up. Some of those concerns deserve serious attention. The challenges are real.

But here's what I keep coming back to: we've been here before.

Y2K. IPv4 exhaustion. The bandwidth crisis of the early internet. Each one looked, at the time, like an immovable wall. Each one became a doorway — because engineers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers refused to accept "we don't have an answer today" as a permanent condition. Remember the Blackberry? While yes, the iPhone destroyed it, the Research In Motion team overcame incredible obstacles in delivering the first mainstream Internet-enabled device on fledgling mobile infrastructure. (I highly recommend the movie about them now on Netflix)

The answer to data center mega-growth isn't a blanket ban. It isn't scapegoating AI for every woe on the grid. That's the intellectual equivalent of banning cars because we hadn't invented traffic lights yet (although I'm in favor of removing cars in certain places, but that's a different post...).

We need smarter cooling technology. Advanced battery and renewable integration. A distributed grid. Thoughtful zoning that protects communities without strangling progress. Demand-side efficiency we haven't fully tapped.

The opportunity is sitting right inside the problem — it always has been.
